Stand Up In the Dark

When Jon Silman approached Spitfire directors a month ago with a crazy idea for a new kind of stand up comedy show, they were all ears. That’s exactly what crowds will be for the next two Saturdays at Spitfire Theater in downtown St. Pete. Some of Tampa Bay’s best comics are stepping out of the limelight for our new Stand Up in the Dark comedy showcase, which promises an echo chamber of laughs in pitch black darkness.

“It’s the second most fun thing you can do in the dark!” according to Danny Bevins, local comic and winner of the 25th Annual San Francisco Comedy Competition, who did a similar show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the UK a few years ago. “Surrender one sense and the other four take over. In pitch black, the joke has no place to hide. This isn’t your father’s stand up comedy.”

The first show on Saturday August 3rd features Brent Savard, Danny Bevins, Johnny B, Jon Silman, Shellie Harris and Rahn Hortman. One week later on Saturday August 10th, you can hear Cam Bertrand, Michael Murillo, Matt Fernandez, Jon Silman, Farzin Moradi and John J Murray on the mic. Both shows are hosted by Jojo White, head writer of Spitfire’s sketch comedy team, host of Spitfire’s stand up comedy open mic and writer-actor-producer for Tampa News Force. 

Both Silman and Bevins brought the show to Spitfire because of the low-key, hi-tech setting, which is ideal for this kind of show. Spitfire’s stage provides the tight comedy club feel you can find in New York’s East Village, with the same kind of theater-style seating you get at larger performance venues. With the perfect storm of top comics and an intimate setting, Stand Up in the Dark promises one of the most unique comedy experiences in Florida.

There’s still time to get tickets, but seats are limited. Stand Up in the Dark runs two weeks only - Saturday August 3rd and 10th at 10p - and marks the final shows at Spitfire’s 18th St S location in downtown’s Grand Central District. The theater seats up to 36 people, so buying tickets earlier is the only way to make sure you don’t get left out.
